Downton Abbey's creator has a Titanic new challenge
New project: Julian Fellowes is to follow on from Downton's Abbey's success with a mini series about the sinking of the Titanic
Now Julian Fellowes is to create a mini-series about the sinking of the Titanic.
Lord Fellowes, who had success charting the relationships between the upper and lower classes in his Oscar-winning film Gosford Park before creating Downton Abbey, will again look at that dynamic in the story about the doomed liner.
ITV said the series will delve into the ‘unique perspectives’ of the passengers on the ‘unsinkable’ ship which was holed by an iceberg on its maiden voyage in 1912.
James Cameron’s 1997 film about the ill-fated voyage – starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet – imagined the lives of the ship’s occupants and was one of the most successful movies of all time. It landed 11 Oscars, including best film.
ITV Studios confirmed yesterday that it had given the go-head for the series – being made in Hungary – which will be screened as either two 90-minute films or four one-hour episodes.
ITV said the series would include ‘mystery and romantic plot lines featuring fictional and historical characters’.
Meanwhile, Lord Fellowes is to give Agatha Christie some Downton Abbey magic, with a film adaptation of Crooked House, to be directed by Neil LaBute.

‘It will be exciting to work with a really vivid, contemporary director.’
Crooked House is set in London in 1947 just after the Second World War, and tells the story of Charles Hayward, whose fiancee Sophie refuses to marry him until the murder of her poisoned grandfather is solved.
Successful: Lord Fellowes wrote Downton Abbey, which was one of ITV's hottest properties
