About Alan Alda (1936 - )

Alan Alda was born Alphonso Joseph D'Abruzzo on January 28, 1936 in New York, New York. Alda is the son of Joan Brown, a former Miss New York pageant winner.
Alan Alda established a notable reputation playing ambitious authority figures that are often corrupt and unethical.
Originally Alan Alda did not sign-on to play the character of Hawkeye Pierce on "M*A*S*H". In fact, only 6 hours before filming the pilot episode did Alda agree to sign on to the show, and only as long as his contract included the agreement that every episode of "M*A*S*H" contains at least one operating room scene; the purpose, according to Alda, was to display the true horrors of war.
In 1975 Alan Alda won the People's Choice Award for "Favorite Male TV-Performer". In his later years Alda would expand his career beyond acting and into the niches of writing and directing. Successful at all three, Alan Alda is the only person ever to win an Emmy for acting, writing, and directing.
Alda has also been active on stage, in London and on Broadway, in "Our Town", and in Neil Simon's "Jake's Women."
Recently Alan Alda received an Oscar nomination for his supporting role in 2004's blockbuster THE AVIATOR starring opposite Leonardo DiCaprio.
