Shutter Island Moves to February 2010
Paramount Pictures has moved Martin Scorsese’sShutter Island from it’s comfy October 2009 awards season friendly release to a less-desirable February 2010 date. The reason? The recession. (I thought the recession was coming to an end? The market just finished at the highest level for 2009 and housing sales are up.) But, Paramount is saying they just can’t afford the $50+ million required to spend on promoting the movie. (Didn’t Paramount release both Transformers 2 and Star Trek — 2 of the top 5 grossing movies of 2009?) Are you telling me they don’t have enough cash in the bank to spend? I think I smell a rat — and I don’t mean the awkwardly out-of-place rat at the end of Scorsese’s The Departed.
The up side to this story is that the movie will likely be around next awards season — with the number of Best Picture Oscar Nominations being upped to 10 the movie will likely have a shot. And, early word has the movie scoring high with test audiences. We’ll just have to wait a little longer.
Shutter Island is now scheduled for release February 19th, 2010.
