The story follows his life as he moulds the Federal Bureau of Investigation into an efficient crime-fighting agency, introducing modern technologies including fingerprinting and forensic laboratories.
Apart from the physical transformation, which with the help of make-up sees the actor age from his thirties into his seventies, another hurdle Leonardo has to overcome is alluding to being gay.
While Hoover, who served in office between 1924 until 1935, denied he was homosexual, rumours circulated that he had an affair with Clyde Tolson, an associate director of the FBI who was his heir.

Naomi plays his J. Edgar's secretary of fifty years Helen Gandy -  who knew all of his secrets - and during a recent interview with talkshow host Jimmy Fallon, she told him just how fond she is of her latest role.
'That's what I love about the character is that she's a strong woman operating in a man's world and she holds her own,' she said.
Fallon mentioned that the biographical drama is directed by the legendary, Eastwood, and it seemed that Naomi had a confession to make.

'I grew up watching his films and had I had a crush on him,' the actress admitted. 'In the workplace, it's certainly not a comfortable situation.'
Fallon went on to say that Eastwood is 'a man's man,' to which Naomi simply replied: 'He is,' and also mentioned that she agreed to do the film before she'd even read the script - simply because Eastwood was directing.
